Department Overview

The Department of German Language at Salahaddin University–Erbil was established in ‎late 2010 through an academic partnership between the university and the German ‎Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), with the aim of fostering German language education ‎and cultural exchange in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Following preparatory seminars in early 2011, the department ‎welcomed its first cohort of students in the 2011–2012 academic year as the seventh ‎department within the College of Languages. From its inception, the department has ‎pursued a dual mission of academic excellence and cultural outreach.

In 2016, ‎collaboration with DAAD was further strengthened through initiatives to support future ‎Master’s and Ph.D. programs, enhance the teaching staff with native German lecturers, ‎and provide students with summer training opportunities in Germany. The department also ‎actively promotes intercultural dialogue, as demonstrated by events such as the 2022 ‎German Unity Day celebration held in partnership with DAAD Iraq. Over the past decade, ‎the Department of German Language has evolved into a dynamic academic center, ‎committed to advancing German language proficiency, fostering cross-cultural ‎understanding, and contributing to the intellectual and cultural life of the Kurdistan Region. ‎
